This next portion of my recent conversation with Dr. Geo focuses on Vitamin D Synergy.
David: Geo, before we get to discussing the importance of vitamin D, I want to encourage anyone who has not yet read How Vitamin D Reduces Inflammation to please do so now. It will provide important context. That said, how can it be that approximately 90% of all adults are vitamin D deficient?
Dr. Geo: Incredible, isn't it? The combination of working indoors and the appropriate application of protective sun screens limit the amount of vitamin D that most people can absorb directly from the sun. It takes nearly 3 hours of full-body sunlight exposure per week with no sunscreen to generate adequate levels of vitamin D. This is why nearly all adults will benefit from vitamin D supplementation.
David: In addition to contributing to the reduction of inflammation in the body*, what are the other important benefits of vitamin D?
Dr. Geo: Research is indicating that adequate intake of vitamin D is a critical component of just about every aspect of health, including serving as a natural ally in healthy cell division and proliferation. In addition, research has linked adequate vitamin D levels to lower occurrence of heart disease.*
David: What is the "adequate intake" per day? How can we determine if we have an adequate concentration in our body?
Dr. Geo: The minimal requirement for vitamin D is 2000 units a day. The concentration of vitamin D is determined through a simple blood test. We are seeking a serum vitamin D level of between 50 and 60 ng/ml. I recommend that my patients start with 2000 units of vitamin D per day, and then I monitor their blood serum levels and adjust accordingly.
David: Our commitment to vitamin D is reflected in our product family. We provide 2 high-quality options:
- Vitamin D Synergy is designed to meet the unique daily needs of men faced with prostate concerns, and contains 2,000 IU of vitamin D3 plus with 200 mcg of vitamin K.*
- OmegAvail Ultra which contains 1,000 IU of vitamin D3 plus 525 mcg of vitamin K.*
Both are great choices. If you have any questions regarding your serum vitamin D level, do not hesitate to contact Dr. Geo or your healthcare practitioner. We are are here to help you.
