We’re in this together: My prostate cancer journey

September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, and I’d like to kick things off by taking a moment to re-introduce myself: My name is David, and I am the Co-Founder and CEO of XY Wellness.

When I was diagnosed in 2004, prostate cancer was viewed as an elderly man’s disease treated by surgery. I was far from elderly, and my tumor profile was a poor fit for surgery.

Fortunately, I met the great duo of Dr. Roach and Dr. Shinohara at UCSF Medical Center and successfully underwent a treatment sequence of ADT, EBRT, and Brachytherapy. I owe them a debt of gratitude, which I repay with our mission here: to give men like you the tools you need to reclaim your own good health and future.

As I have learned, we need to view prostate cancer as a life-threatening condition requiring our lifelong commitment to keep at bay. Although it begins with working with the best available specialists you can find, it continues each day through the informed, reasoned choices we make.

We founded XY Wellness to help you boost your body’s innate ability to fight this disease with our integrative roadmap of nutraceutical support and lifestyle choices. And as our community of men can attest to, this journey includes four major psychological and physiological milestones that you will experience:

MILESTONE 1: DIAGNOSIS (DISORIENTATION AND LOSS OF CONTROL)

When we are diagnosed with prostate cancer, the immediate psychological effect is a sense of loss of both health and control. We experience disorientation and a heightened fear of an unknown future that may include death. We lack answers for ourselves and for those for whom we seek to “be strong.”

MILESTONE 2: RETURN TO EQUILIBRIUM (REGAIN CONTROL)

Our first objective is to help men regain a sense of equilibrium. We provide a path to regaining control over your emotions, to create a “game plan” to better understand your condition, and to then go about addressing it in a manner that will allow you to regain control and reclaim your future. We begin by helping you to develop the knowledge, skills, and habits that will allow for improved prognosis and quality of life.

MILESTONE 3: CHART THE FUTURE (DEFINE THE NEW YOU)

Armed with a new sense of control with new knowledge, skills, and habits, you will be in a position to set new and progressively challenging goals for your overall wellness and quality of life. You will set your own goals and commit to doing the necessary work to achieve them. In return, XY Wellness will provide you with reinforcement and ongoing trusted support. Achieving and then maintaining health and quality of life is a lifelong process and one in which you can go as far as you aspire to go.

MILESTONE 4: ACHIEVE THE ULTIMATE (GIVE BACK)

To us, the ultimate achievement in the path to well-being is to be able to give back to those just starting their journey.

There are 3.3 million men in the US alone dealing with a diagnosis of prostate cancer. At XY Wellness, we know we can help each of these men as a lifelong complement to his relationship with his specialist. As such, we continue to expand our reach, to simplify our product line, and to make our educational materials even more readily accessible.

As always, the goal is to stack the odds in your favor, so please take full advantage of all of the resources that our community has to offer:

As for myself, I’ve now reached the twentieth anniversary of my diagnosis. And I remain diligent in doing what I need to do daily to maintain my good health and quality of life. So far, so good.

Where are you on your personal journey? Please drop us a note to let us know. Our sole mission here is to help you thrive along the way, so let us know how you are doing—and how we can support your efforts to keep prostate cancer at bay.

In the meantime, we will continue our efforts to raise awareness and provide resources to help men like you to rebuild, reclaim, and renew their good health and quality of life.

All the Best,

David, Co-Founder and CEO
